In April 1983, Els and I decided to watch the finish of the Dundee Marathon - I had no perception of what it would lead to. Firstly, I watched Don Macgregor finish in his own inimitable style, the admiration I had for Don's performance has never left me. In that race was another person, whose good nature and enthusiasm for running, could only be described as infectious - John Hendry. Having contacted John, he advised me that Fife AC were recruiting people who had a desire to run a marathon and would meet on Tuesday nights at Bell Baxter School, Cupar. From that first meeting in October 1983, I have enjoyed many years of good company, from a group of characters that I wouldn't have missed for the world. Thinking back there have been some highlights that may jog a few memories - excuse the pun. First was my first marathon at Dundee 1984, finishing in 3 hours 36 minutes, ironically I still don't remember the finish. Also I recall that Dundee Marathon in the snowstorm, which amazingly enough was my best time of 3 hours 11 minutes, which couldn't have been achieved without the solid support of David Greig. David pushed me, cajoled and badgered me to cover more miles and to participate in some speed work - which proves what can be achieved. Next was the dinner in St. Andrews in honour of Dave Francis, no one could deserve it more than the man who forced me up hills during those early days - it was much appreciated. Also at that dinner, Els and I sat with the dynamic duo from Newburgh, Peter Low and Tom Ross with Catherine and Dot. I am appreciative of the friendship extended by all of them so freely and also the times spent at the Newburgh Festival Run and the unbelievable Newburgh Pram Race, at which I have had the good fortune not to take part. The pleasure of sharing a friend's triumph, as with Stuart Asher's win in the Dundee Marathon, and celebrating quietly in the courtyard of the Sandford Hotel, with Stuart and his family. Stuart, the quiet man with so much natural ability. Later, we spent a weekend with Alan and Jenny McGillivray at the World Vets Road race in Lytham St. Annes - a great weekend. In addition to those experiences mentioned, were the meetings at Marathons in Dundee and Glasgow and the many half's (marathons) that meant so many enjoyable hours. The joining of Fife A.C. and Fife Southern brought together more enthusiasts culminating, in my opinion, with the 1990 Alloa to Bishopbriggs Relay with three teams, of which I was proud to be a member. In spite of appalling weather, it generated a team spirit that will remain in my memory forever. Tuesday nights have become a way of life, unfortunately disrupted by work and I would like to express my thanks for those who have supported me, when trying to catch the lead group - John Clarke, Davie Donaldson, Frank McHarg, John Quinn and many others over the years. The purpose of these ramblings is to try and express my deep appreciation to all in Fife AC that have contributed to my enjoyment over the last 8 years, as now it must come to an end. From early 1992, synonymous with the significant changes in Europe, Els and I will be moving to Dusseldorf, Germany. My promotion is a delight for my career but a sad move to have to leave such a beautiful area as Fife, although it is our intention to return to our existing home when retirement comes. Well the time has come to pack, this weekend we are house hunting, but I'd better not forget my shoes and shorts - life must go on. See you in the London Marathon 1992, enjoy your running and may life give you all you want out of it.
John and Els McNally.
*Footnote John moved to Dusseldorf, Germany to work for a couple of years. He has since returned to Cupar.
