FIFE
AC TOUR OF FIFE 2003
GB internationalist Andrew Lemoncello, St.Andrews, was in outstanding
form winning all five races in the 5-day Tour of Fife.
Lemoncello scored a decisive victory at the opening race held over the
West Sands on the first night leading from start to finish and as the
field rounded the far point into the soft sand Lemoncello was already
200 metres clear at the old breakwater turning point. The steeplechaser
eased up towards the finish clocking a record-breaking 21 minutes 42
seconds over the 4.2 mile out and back beach course. Glenrothes runner
Chris Russell, second overall in the 2002 Tour, chased home in second

womens field placing 13th overall (25.05) well clear of Julia Kennedy
(Portobello) 32nd overall -28.24, with Hazel Bradley (Anster Haddies)
the third woman home (29.16).
Lemoncello’s winning-streak continued on Tuesday’s East Lomond Hill
Race at Coul Den, Glenrothes. A forced slight change to the course
prevented what would have been another course record as Lemoncello
covered the 6 mile route to the East Lomond summit and back in 35
minutes 51 seconds chased by Kirkcaldy under 20 athlete Graham Bee
(37.05). Wednesday’s 4 mile road race proved to be a stroll in the
park as Lemoncello clocked 20 minutes 15 seconds over three laps of the
Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy circuit with Bee in second (21.16).
An awesome display followed at Thursday’s 2,250 metres uphill time
trial rising 754ft to the East Lomond car park. A time of 9 minutes 44
seconds improved the record by 18 seconds with Bee again the nearest
challenger (10.21). Friday’s final event, a 4 mile trail race at
Heatherhall Woods, Giffordtown proved to be a formality as Lemoncello
cruised home in 20 minutes 53 seconds ahead of Russell (21.37).
Lemoncello’s total time for the week was 1 hour 48 minutes 25 seconds
with Russell runner-up for the third consecutive year (1:57.30 ahead of
Pete Belcher - Royal Marines (1:57.44) in third.
It was literally an up and down week for Russell with a bout of sickness
on the descent of the East Lomond reducing the Glenrothes runner to 5th
place in Tuesday’s hill race having been placed third at the summit.
As a warm-up for Wednesday’s Beveridge Park road race Russell placed
3rd in the Luss Highland Games hill race near Loch Lomond making the
start line in Kirkcaldy with just ten minutes to spare. Having secured
second place trophy in ‘The Tour’ on the Friday the clubs most
prolific racer made the journey to the Lochearnhead Highland Games the
next day winning the Meall Reamdhar 5 mile hill race in a record 30
minutes 58 seconds ahead of Ian Anderson (Kirriemuir) - 31.18 and John
Gallagher (Ochil HR) - 31.31. A week of seven races in six days!

Trudi Thomson (Pitreavie) who won all five races including record times
in the beach race and hill climb. Trudi placed 9th overall (2 hours 09
minutes 03 seconds) well clear of Margaret McLaren who came through in

Scottish champion over road, country and track pulled away over the
steepest sections of the 7.5 mile (3,000ft) course to win in 55 minutes
20 seconds with early leader Lemoncello in second (56.27) and Dave
Rodgers (Lochaber) third. There was disappointment for Owen Greene,

strength-sapping conditions to place 14th. Far happier was Fife AC
recent recruit Andrew Liston in 9th while Dusty Spates placed 21st.
Graham Bee a Scottish representative at last years World Championships
failed to finish the junior mens race, a casualty of the conditions,
while Edmund Halliwell ran well to place third over the 5.5 mile

course ahead of Steve Quinn's (East Kilbride) - 37.14. Former Scottish
