Fife AC athlete Chris Baily was in sensational form at Glasgow's Kelvin

INTER-COUNTIES CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, NOTTINGHAM
There were mixed fortunes for the two Fife AC athletes representing East
of Scotland at the UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at
Nottingham.
Under 20 Scottish champion Andrew Lemoncello, called up to represent the
Senior team, dropped out of the 12km race on the last lap when placed as
the leading Scot due to stomach cramps It was left to Daniel Leggate to
lead home the team in 28th place, first Scot, timed at 39 minutes 30
seconds, well clear of Commonwealth Games 10,000m finalist Glen Stewart
in 47th.
SCOTTISH SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, GLASGOW
At Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall the Scottish junior indoor long jump and
triple jump champions gained valuable experience competing at the very
top level at the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships. Chris Baily
placed 7th in the senior long jump competition with a distance of 6.39
metres. British record holder Chris Tomlinson (Newham & Essex
Beagles) won with 7.96m ahead of AAA’s champion Darren Ritchie (Sale)
- 7.56m. Meanwhile fellow Glenrothes section member Jude Beimers came up
against Femi Akinsanya (Trafford) in the triple jump placing 5th
(13.42m) with Akinsanya taking the title with 16.09 metres.
DEVILS BURDENS RELAY RACE, FALKLAND
A record 53 teams completed the club’s Devils Burdens Hill Race from
Falkland - a six man relay over 21 miles (4100ft) covered in four stages
with the first and fourth legs run in pairs.
Following the opening stage over the East Lomond to Holl Reservoir Des
Crowe and Adrian Callan held a clear lead for Shettleston Veterans timed
at 36 minutes 17 seconds followed by Stuart Whitlie and Andy Spenceley
for title holders Carnethy (37.11). Brian Cruickshank and Ian Overton
reached the changeover for Fife in 6th place (39.16). The second stage
from Holl Reservoir over the Bishophill to Scotlandwell saw Glenrothes
athlete Chris Russell post the second fastest leg time of 26 minutes to
improve Fife to third. Adam Ward, however, brought Carnethy into the
lead with the stages fastest time of 25 minutes 35 seconds.
The third stage of this testing race is undoubtedly the toughest with
the runners climbing back up the Bishophill before the long trek over
rough terrain to the summit of the West Lomond and the steep descent to
the changeover above Gateside. Carnethy held their advantage with final
stage runner Mark Johnson holding a healthy two minutes lead at the
changeover. Shettleston pair Jethro Lennox and Pete Walder clocked the
fastest stage time of 48 minutes 22 seconds closely followed by Adrian
Davis and William Law for Fife (48.52) and Lothian’s Ian Donnan and
David Godfree (48.25). With barely twenty seconds separating Shettleston,
Fife and Lothian the battle for team prizes through the Lomond foothills
back to Falkland was definitely on.
Lothian’s Colin Meek and Fife’s Graham Bee engaged in keen pursuit
first overhauling second-placed Shettleston before rapidly closing down
on Carnethy with only 54 seconds separating the first three at the
finish. Mark Johnson held on for Carnethy timed at 35 minutes 36 seconds
with only seven seconds between Meek’s stage time of 34.24 and Bee’s
34.31. Back down the field Welsh Commonwealth Games athlete Donald
Naylor squeezed in with the second fastest stage time of 34.27 bringing
Hunters Bog Trotters through into 14th.
Fife veterans placed 8th, second veteran squad while the Fife Juniors
came home in 20th, first junior team.

SCOTTISH NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, LINWOOD
Fife AC’s Andrew Lemoncello retained his Scottish National Under 20
Cross Country title at Linwood last Saturday leading from gun to tape.
Lemoncello rapidly opened up a 200 metres gap ahead of his closest rival
over the first of two laps increasing his advantage to 45 seconds as he
coasted over the final lap. Finishing with a time of 26 minutes 01
seconds for the 8km course it was evident that had the GB junior
internationalist been allowed to contest the Senior event he would have
been a serious contender for the senior title. Kirkcaldy athlete Graham
Bee had his best run of the season to place 7th (27.43) while Jamie
Lamb, Cupar, finished 24th (31.24). Unfortunately with no fourth team
member present on the day the opportunity for certain team medals
disappeared.
There were mixed fortunes in the Senior 12km event with title holder
Glen Stewart (Mizuno) dropping out soon after 5km, while clear leader
with one lap remaining, Phil Mowbray (Hunters Bog Trotters) suffered a
stitch losing ground rapidly. One of the runners to gain ground was
Fife’s Daniel Leggate who moved from from ninth to third over the
closing stages claiming the bronze medal in the field of 400 timed at 40
minutes 31 seconds, twenty-five seconds down on winner Graeme Reid
(Clydesdale). Chris Russell, Glenrothes, also had a good run amongst the
quality field to place 61st (44.55) with the team placing tenth.
The under 17’s race saw John Buchan, Burntisland, record his best-ever
championship result finishing 22nd over the 6.4km course in 23 minutes
37 seconds only ten seconds down on East of Scotland under 17 champion
Alastair Hay (Central).
In the youngest age groups the clubs best results came in the under 13

respective girls and boys events.
